Connecting with Others through Serving

As we have mentioned previously, this life stage is unique in that you are at a maximum point of experience and have more time and presumably more financial resources than ever before. This potent combination equates to an enormous level of flexibility and impact.

Don’t underestimate the vast amount of energy and talent within you just waiting to serve something much larger than yourself. In physics we learn about potential energy (imagine a ball being held above the ground) and kinetic energy (the ball flying through the air, energy in motion). We just need to turn our potential energy into kinetic energy—and we can do that almost exclusively through our connection with others.

Think of the individuals, families, and organizations you associate with. Is there a specific way you can leverage your unique abilities and resources to impact them? Perhaps you could become a mentor, or channel specific knowledge from your career in a way that transforms an organization and connects you with the people they serve.

Connecting through serving certainly beats squandering your days on social media and web-surfing. In fact, current research attributes loneliness to time spent staring at a screen and perusing social media. Most people post only the best snapshots of their lives to meet that unquenchable societal standard of “perfect.” It’s a self-defeating cycle, like materialism (“I need more stuff”) or evaluating yourself strictly on performance (“I’ll never be good enough”). This kind of self-talk eventually punctures our self-worth.
